A sad day in history.
April 5, 1992. The Siege of Sarajevo begins, and lasts until 29 February, 1996.
Serb forces from the Republika Srpska seize the capital city of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sarajevo, and is to become the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, lasting longer than both the seiges of Stalingrad and Leningrad alike. Siege forces numbered around eighteen thousand in the surrounding hills and an estimated ten thousand people were killed or went missing in the city. Three Serb officials were convicted and sentenced by the ICTY for crimes against humanity, and one of the eleven charges against Radovan Karadžić includes the siege.
Today marks the twentieth passing of the day of the siege.
